Is SharePoint Storage Explorer really free?
Yes. Completely free. We built it internally for our own work with SharePoint admins, and after enough people kept asking for it we released it as a free download. Use it forever, no email-capture wall to keep using it.
Does it work on large SharePoint Online tenants?
Yes. The Light Scan is designed for quick checks on tenants of any size. The Deep Scan takes longer on larger tenants but produces highly accurate measurements for a full storage audit.
Is it safe? What permissions does it need?
SharePoint Storage Explorer runs with read-only access against SharePoint Online. It cannot modify, move, or delete any content. It can't even create permissions changes.
How does it relate to Squirrel?
SharePoint Storage Explorer gives you the visibility. Squirrel is the automated action. Many customers use SP Storage Explorer during the assessment phase to build a Squirrel business case, then use it alongside Squirrel for ongoing tenant-wide reporting.
Can it find inactive or old files?
